For the best Meru safari experience, start your game drives early in the morning when wildlife is most active. If your schedule allows, choose a private safari vehicle for greater flexibility and more time to explore the park's diverse habitats and wildlife.
Day by day
Day 1 · Nairobi → Nairobi
Your 3 Days Meru Safari Tour begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi. Travel north through the scenic central Kenya countryside, with views of Mount Kenya and the surrounding agricultural landscapes, before continuing toward Meru National Park. Meru National Park is approximately 348 km from Nairobi by road, with access via routes through Nyeri–Nanyuki–Meru or Embu. Arrive at Meru National Park around lunchtime and proceed to your safari lodge or tented camp for check-in and lunch. In the afternoon, head out for your first game drive in Meru National Park. Explore the park's savannah, woodland and riverine habitats while looking for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and predators. Meru is particularly known for its diverse wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, rhino, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe. As the sun sets, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay. Day 2 · Meru National Park → Meru National Park
Drive – Rhino Sanctuary & Elsa's Grave Wake up early for a morning game drive in Meru National Park, when wildlife is generally active and the morning light provides excellent conditions for photography. After breakfast, continue exploring different sections of the park, following the rivers, open plains and woodland areas in search of wildlife. A major highlight today is the Meru Rhino Sanctuary, home to both black and white rhinos. Kenya Wildlife Service describes the sanctuary as offering one of the park's best opportunities for viewing these endangered species in the wild. Continue toward Elsa's Grave, one of Meru's most famous historical attractions. Meru is closely associated with Joy and George Adamson and Elsa the lioness, whose story became internationally known through Born Free. Enjoy a picnic lunch or lunch at your lodge, followed by an afternoon game drive along Meru's riverine areas. The park's rivers and varied habitats create opportunities to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and numerous bird species. KWS notes that Meru has more than 400 recorded bird species. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.
