Honest, specific pricing logic — what drives safari costs and where your money is best spent.
Why safari pricing feels opaque
Almost every safari is tailor-made, so honest operators quote per itinerary rather than publishing fixed prices. Here's what actually drives the number.
The five big cost drivers
- Season. Peak (June–October, late December) can cost 30–50% more than green season for the same camp.
- Accommodation level. The single biggest line. Mid-range lodges deliver the same wildlife as luxury camps — the difference is plumbing and thread count.
- Group size. A private vehicle costs roughly the same for 2 or 5 travellers, so per-person prices fall as your party grows.
- Flying vs driving. Scheduled flights save days; driving saves money and shows you the country.
- Park fees and permits. Fixed by governments — gorilla permits and crater fees are the largest single items.
Where to spend, where to save
Spend on: nights inside prime parks, an experienced guide, and timing your trip to the wildlife you want. Save on: shoulder-season dates, driving where flights are optional, and mixing one or two luxury nights into a mid-range itinerary.
