A practical first-timer's guide to Kenya's parks, routes, durations and how to combine safari with the coast.
Where should a first-timer go?
For most first visits, the Maasai Mara is unmissable — reliable Big Five viewing and, July–October, the Great Migration. Amboseli adds elephants beneath Kilimanjaro; Lake Nakuru brings flamingos and near-guaranteed rhinos.
How long do you need?
- 3–4 days: The Mara alone — a superb short safari.
- 6–7 days: Mara + Nakuru + Amboseli (the classic circuit) or Mara + a Rift Valley lake.
- 8–10 days: Add the coast — Diani or Lamu — for a bush-and-beach finale.
Fly or drive?
Driving links parks affordably with scenic Rift Valley views; scheduled flights save hours and suit tighter schedules. Most of our travellers mix both.
What does it cost?
Mid-range safaris (comfortable lodges, private vehicle, park fees) sit meaningfully below luxury camps but deliver 90% of the experience. Your budget is best spent on time in good parks rather than gold taps.
Combining with the coast
The Mara–Diani combination is our most popular honeymoon formula: internal flights make it effortless.
