The herds are always somewhere — this is where to be, when.
What the Migration actually is
Around 1.5 million wildebeest, plus zebras and gazelles, circle the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem year-round, chasing rainfall and fresh grass. It never ends — it just moves.
Where the herds are
- January–March: The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains — calving season, peak predator action.
- April–May: The herds push north and west as the long rains arrive.
- June: Western corridor — the first Grumeti River crossings.
- July–October: The north — the dramatic Mara River crossings between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara.
- November–December: Back south through the Loliondo and central Serengeti.
What river crossings are really like
Crocodiles, chaos and dust — but crossings can't be scheduled. We plan 3+ nights in the right region so you give yourself the best odds.
Which side: Kenya or Tanzania?
July–September both work. The Mara offers denser predator viewing; the Serengeti's northern camps sit right at the crossing points. Your consultant matches the choice to your dates and budget.
